Udaipur – The City of Lakes
One fine day, my friend and I were complaining about our mundane lives and how stuck we were in the same old remote work routine. We’ve been friends for five years and have had tons of travel plans, but none of those ever got executed. But that day, we were so done that the urge to escape routine life was greater than all the excuses. We then scanned through the web to find a place suitable for both work and fun, and the arrow hit right at Udaipur.
We were naturally drawn to it just by the pictures on the web and a few videos. But Udaipur was way more beautiful than those pretty pictures.
I have been there thrice since then in different months and have brought a first-hand experience for you guys.
Best Time to Visit Udaipur
Udaipur has a Pleasant climate from September to March.
September to November – The climate is decent, sunny to cloudy during the daytime with pleasant evenings. There are a decent number of tourists here during this period. The stays and local commuting become comparatively cheaper during these months compared to the peak season.
November to December – This can be considered as a peak season in Udaipur. With lots of tourists filling the streets and ghats, it becomes lively and exciting to visit Udaipur during these days. As these days fall between Christmas and New Year vacations, many solo travellers and groups from India and other countries come here to experience the festive vibe. Stays have to be booked well in advance post mid-December to avoid the last-minute hustle. This vibe stays till around the first week of January before the city takes a relaxing breath again till February
March – March is again a festive season in India and travellers from across the globe come together to experience the colorful hues of the city drenched in the colors of Holi.
You can visit Udaipur from March till June, but the weather here gets extremely hot making it difficult to explore and get the most from the City.

Ways To Reach Udaipur
Udaipur is very well connected through Railways, Airways and Roadways from Mumbai, Delhi and Pune.
There are direct flights from all these cities, there is a huge difference in fares during peak season days and normal days.
For affordable options, trains come to the rescue
There is one direct train from Mumbai that runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and takes around 15 hours to reach
There is one direct train from Pune that runs only on Fridays and takes around 19 hours to reach
and There are many trains from Delhi with an average travel time of around 13 hours
For unplanned trips, there are buses too
You can find many direct buses on Redbus from all these cities. The travel time would be slightly longer than the trains, but once you reach there, it will all be worth it, trust me 🙂
Local Commute in Udaipur
If you book your stays in the Old City, you can visit the majority of the places by walking, which would be within the 3 km range. Someone who does not prefer walking can easily rent a bike with an average per day cost of Rs 500/- prices may vary depending on the month and days you visit. Local transport (Auto Rickshaw) is also easily available from any corner of the city, with an average fare of Rs 100/- this solely varies based on negotiation skills though 😀
For long-distance commutes such as coming to and fro from the airport or railway station you can opt for private cabs, but I found it a bit unreliable (as our ride got cancelled 3 times before finally, one driver agreed with a condition to pay him a little extra).
Solo Travelling in Udaipur
So, if you have a question about whether you can do a solo trip to Udaipur, the answer is…
Yes – Udaipur is very much an ideal destination for solo travellers even for those who want to experience solo travelling for the first time. There are just a few things to keep in mind though
- Udaipur is pretty much lively throughout the day till around 10.30 at night. After that, I would suggest spending time at your accommodation as the streets start getting desolated and silent.
- Solo travellers can easily make friends in Udaipur as the people here are welcoming and approachable. But I suggest keeping your senses active while interacting with anyone, as there are high chances of you getting friend-zoned (these tips are applicable wherever we go across the world)
Workation in Udaipur
If you are wondering whether Udaipur is workation-friendly or not, the answer is..
A big yes – This is a perfect place if you want to explore a new destination without taking much leaves from the office.
Udaipur offers the best views and experiences in the early morning (sunrises, a morning walk along the lakeside, peaceful time along the ghats, etc) or after 5 PM in the evenings (Sunsets, lights, live music in cafes, etc). Usually, afternoons are hot here, so you can easily work during the afternoons at your stay or any cafe with a view of the lake and good food without fear of missing out on anything. In my opinion, you can get the most out of the city even with no or a few days off.

Stay Recommendations in Udaipur
There are ample options for stays: Lavish hotels, new generation hostels, relaxing resorts, homely air bnbs and whatnot. You can choose whatever suits your taste, choices, and of course budget.
I am someone who prefers staying at hostels. It gives me that young vibe from a like-minded crowd, they have this common area where you can interact with other travellers and enjoy various community activities. If you are on a workation you will surely not be the only one working if you stay at hostels; plus, they have dedicated areas for you to work and chill with fellow travellers. Also, if you are solo, I would suggest booking your stay in a dormitory at these hostels. You can make good friends here to take your trip to unexpected dimensions.
Some Hostels Options are –
- The Hosteller
- Hostel Mama
- Moustache Escapes
Tip: Book your stay in Udaipur Old City, preferably in close vicinity to Ghangaur Ghat (Thank me later 😉)
My Overall Experience
This was my first long trip with my friend and hence I have this soft corner for Udaipur. The experience here actually rescued me from what I was going through mentally at that time. It was when I completed this trip that I realised my love for travelling, and believe me, I have travelled so much since then and will continue to do so. Just to put it in simple words, my initial plan was to travel with one of my friends just for a week, but while returning, I had a group of friends with a bag full of memories from the 20 days we spent there. (Stay tuned to my upcoming blogs to know my detailed experience, friends I made on my first-ever trip, sudden plan changes, and some exciting twists and turns)
It has to be a real deal for a place for me to visit more than once, and Udaipur holds a second position on my list 👏 (will let you know about the first one soon ;)).
